Duties & Responsibilities Purpose of Position:
Under direct supervision, assists dentists in providing dental services to patients in clinics and health care settings; performs related work.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
1. Prepares patients for examination and treatment.
2. Assists dentists by handing them required instruments for the treatment of patients.
3. Prepares instruments for sterilization, disinfects surface areas, and maintains clinic and clinic equipment in a hygienic condition, in accordance with infection control procedures.
4. Prepares examination room for procedures.
5. Takes and uploads dental digital imaging.
6. Mixes amalgams, cements, composites and related materials.
7. Performs laboratory procedures, such as pouring and packaging models from impressions for prosthetics.
8. Maintains records of patients, instruments and models.
9. Maintains clinic equipment to ensure that it is in working order.
10. Reports shortages in supplies and material and necessary equipment repairs.
11. Assists dentist in patient management; interacts with patients and the public.
12. Schedules patient appointments; enters and retrieves data and information into computerized systems.
Minimum Qualifications 1. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by successful completion of an accredited or approved Dental Assistant Program, which included or was supplemented by 600 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside; or
2. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by successful completion of an accredited or approved Dental Assistant Program, which included or was supplemented by 300 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside; and 6 (six) months of satisfactory full-time experience as a Dental Assistant performing all of the following duties: taking and uploading dental digital imaging, assisting dentist at chairside, and preparing dental instruments for sterilization; or
3. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent; and one (1) year of satisfactory full-time experience as a Dental Assistant performing the duties described in "2" above; or
4. A satisfactory combination of education and experience which is equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above. Each 100 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside is equivalent to two (2) months of full-time experience. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent.
Experience as a receptionist or clerk in a dentist's office is not acceptable towards meeting the qualification requirements.
In addition to base compensation, you may also receive the following based on the Collectively-Bargained Agreement:
An annual education differential if you currently possess an appropriate degree in nursing or an allied health discipline from an accredited college or university, as listed below:
• Bachelors in allied health discipline = $900
• Masters in allied health discipline = $1,200
• Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) = $1,800
• Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) = $2,000
• Doctorate in Education, Nursing Practice or PhD in Nursing (DNP) = $2,500
An annual certification differential if you currently hold appropriate certifications that are nationally recognized in the discipline or area of specialization for which you are employed, as listed below:
• Certifications in the following disciplines/areas of specialization are eligible for premium pay at $3,000:
• Certifications in the following disciplines/areas of specialization are eligible for premium pay at $2,000:
• All other nationally recognized certifications are eligible for regular pay at $1,878.
An annual certification differential ranging from $1,878 up to $4,878 if you currently hold appropriate certifications that are nationally recognized in the discipline or area of specialization for which you are employed.
An annual nursing experience differential ranging from $987 up to $8,190 for up to 10 years of experience if you have outside nursing experience as a Staff Nurse.
